Got 30 minutes? Any beginning sewer can make this easy tote bag. Even fabric glue would probably hold this cute fox tote together.
1. Cut out 2 even rectangles
Cut out 2 rectangles about the same size as you want your tote bag to be + 1/2 inch seam allowance. Now cut out two squares from the bottom corners. The bigger the squares the ‘wider’ your bag will turn out. The measurements I used were 20″ x 15″ for the rectangles. The squares were 2″ x 2″ each.
2. Sew the two sides together
Lay the 2 sides on top of each other, right sides facing in. Sew along the lines I show in the picture. You’re only leaving the top and squares open.
You’re half way there !
3. Close the sides
This is probably the ‘hardest’ part of the tutorial. Open up the square by pulling the sides. Lay both sides on top of each other to form a T. Sew straight across, leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Your tote bag is basically done, all you need to do is add straps.
4. Make your straps
Cut out two long, small rectangles. They should be double the size you want your straps to be + 1/2 inch seam allowance. Fold them in half, right sides facing towards each other. Leave 1/2 inch seam allowance and sew a straight line.
Make sure you pay extra attention to the sides as you’re going to turn them inside out. Turn the straps so that the right sides are facing out. Tada, straps!
5. Attach the straps
Lay the ends of your strap parallel to the top of your tote bag. Sew the strap to the bag. Attach 1 on each side.
Fold the top of your bag into a ‘hem’. Sew 2 more times to make it hold. Sew all the way around, don’t sew your bag shut!
Time to get foxy!
